ASBO ORDER FOR £6,000 RAMPAGE IN TOWN

ASBO ORDER FOR £6,000 RAMPAGE IN TOWN CENTRE

09:30 - 27 October 2005
A town centre video of a young man smashing shop windows in St Austell, causing damage costed at around £6,000, was shown at Truro Crown Court on Thursday. Identified on film and by his blood from having cut himself, 18-year-old S K pleaded guilty to nine charges of criminal damage with one taken into consideration, and was sent to a young offenders' institution for two years.

Judge Jeffrey Rucker also imposed a two-year Anti-Social Behaviour Order which will come into effect when K is released and which includes a condition that he does not enter St Austell town centre between 6pm and 9am.

Describing his offending as "wanton and utterly irresponsible", the Judge declared: "It is deeply depressing to hear that you are the father of one child and that another is expected.

"Being a parent is one of the most difficult things you will ever have to do in your life, it requires long-term commitment.

"You are not fit to look after yourself.

"You pleaded guilty because the evidence against you was utterly overwhelming."

Prosecutor Barrie van den Berg said that it was at about 3am on April 27 that Knight systematically attacked the windows with a trolley.

It was not until a police car arrived that he ran off.

K, he added, had four previous convictions for eight offences, including for damaging property, and had also received reprimands and cautions.

Defence counsel Iain Leadbetter said that K had committed mindless violence when in drink.

But his time in custody had brought him up sharply and it might be that his stated intention to behave properly in future was genuine.

Restormel Community Partnership has now been successful in obtaining ASBOs for two local offenders in the past three weeks.

This follows the employment of retired police officer Dave Parke as the borough's anti-social behaviour co-ordinator.

The borough council's community safety officer, Dave George, said: " The successful application for an ASBO to control the behaviour of an individual who was constantly causing alarm and distress to his victims is a result of the time, effort and knowledge that Mr Parke was able to provide.

"It sends a clear message to other people who cause anti-social problems in the local community that we will work together and that we have the resources to address their behaviour.

"We will seek the assistance of the courts or use the other interventions available to us to tackle anti-social behaviour and make a positive difference to the quality of life enjoyed by our residents," said Mr George, a former police inspector.

Ladies and gentlemen, one of my ex boyfriends. There's a pic in the paper but I don't think I could get away with putting it in here!
